13 Aug, 2013: Archbishop Myers’ Failure to Protect Children

As we stand beside one of former Priest Thomas Maloney’s courageous victims, Andrew Ward and his family today, and in light of Archbishop Myers’ botched handling of the Michael Fugee and Robert Chabak scandals, it is with concern for past and future victims of clergy sexual abuse that we question Archbishop Myers’ handling of child sexual abuse allegations.   While Father Maloney was employed by the Diocese of Peoria from the 1960s through 2000s, at least three separate allegations of sexual impropriety were made against him by victims or their families. These allegations along with …

Brooklyn D.A. Releases Names Of Orthodox Jews Convicted In Child Sex-Abuse Cases

NEW YORK(1010 WINS) — In a massive shift in policy Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes has released the names of 46 convicted child sex-abusers, according to a published report. On Sunday, The New York Post, reported that Hynes had turned over the names of 45 men and 1 woman in the Orthodox Jewish Community who were convicted in ‘sex-attack cases’. In the past Hynes had avoided releasing those names amidst concerns that doing so could cause victims to be exposed to intimidation tactics by other members of the community and that it might deter other victims from speaking out, the Post re…

Confronting the Vatican on the Rights of Children

This week in Geneva, the United Nation’s Committee on the Rights of the Child is hearing closed-door testimony about official Catholicism’s compliance with the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. One of almost 200 signatories to the convention, the Holy See (the formal name of the Vatican state) is fifteen years late in delivering a report describing whether it has acted to “protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence” as the convention requires. Victims of sexually abusive priests, their advocates, various American grand juries, Irish government investigators and t…

After Sexual Abuse Conviction, New Scrutiny on Youth Athletics

McKINNEY, Tex. — Kelley Currin, a divorced mother of four, started a romantic relationship in January with a middle-aged teacher in a supervisory position at the middle school that employed them. The district rules are clear on relationships between consenting adults when one has decision-making power over the other: they are not allowed. So in the fall, Currin, who teaches seventh-grade science, will transfer to a nearby school.  Currin, 43, laughed ruefully at the incongruity of her situation. She was sexually abused by her swim coach, Rick Curl, for five years in the 1980s beginning w…

New York May Ease Statute of Limitations for Decades-Old Child Sex Abuse Claims

Adults abused as children decades ago in New York could file civil lawsuits against their abusers and the institutions that employed them, if a national surge of legislative reform reaches Albany. Advocates for child sex abuse victims say that this year, the prospects look good for a bill that sank four times previously following strong opposition from Catholic and ultra-Orthodox groups. If passed, the legislation could ease the way for a slew of lawsuits against Jewish and Catholic institutions accused of failing to report accounts of child sex abuse to law enforcement authorities.“I’ve ne…

Renewed Push to Update Statute-of-Limitations Laws in Child Sex Abuse Cases

Saying the move is long overdue and flanked by high-profile reform advocates, state Reps. Louise Williams Bishop and Michael P. McGeehan, both D-Phila., today announced a renewed push to update archaic statute-of-limitations laws in child sexual abuse cases at a Capitol Rotunda news conference. Bishop and McGeehan said their respective bills are patterned after ones they introduced in the last two-year legislative session but died after being inexplicably bottled up in the committee process. Bishop has reintroduced her legislation, now known as H.B. 237, which would abolish the statute of li…

Therapist Sentenced to 103 Years for Child Sexual Abuse

An unlicensed therapist and respected member of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn was sentenced on Tuesday to 103 years in prison for repeatedly sexually abusing a young woman, beginning the attacks when she was 12.  The therapist, Nechemya Weberman, 54, a member of the Satmar Hasidic community of Williamsburg, did not react as the judge sentenced him. The victim, now 18, who delivered an impassioned statement asking for the maximum sentence to be imposed, dabbed away tears.“The message should go out to all victims of sexual abuse that your cries will be heard and justice wil…

Lawmaker Margaret Markey says Poly Prep Sex Abuse Scandal Should Lead to Elimination of Statute of Limitations for Victims

New York state assemblywoman Margaret Markey has introduced legislation since 2006 that would permit victims of childhood sexual abuse to seek criminal charges and file civil lawsuits until their 28th birthday. But the Queens Democrat said the Poly Prep Country Day School lawsuit and other sex abuse scandals have pushed her to call for a complete end to the criminal and civil statute of limitations when she introduces the Child Victims Act later this month. “As this case demonstrates, adding a few extra years to current law is not enough,” Markey said of the Poly Prep scandal. As the Daily …
