New Jersey Diocese Stops Attorney General’s Attempt to Convene a Grand Jury

New Jersey Catholic Officials Use Legal Tactics in Their Attempt to Hide AG’s Investigation from Public

“The actions of the Diocese of Camden are a thinly veiled attempt to hide the truth from the parishioners and the public again”, said attorney Jeff Anderson

(Camden, NJ) – In 2018, New Jersey AG, Gurbir Grewal, announced that he was forming his own task force to investigate allegations of abuse and cover-up of abuse. The purpose of the investigation was to present their findings to a Grand Jury which would result in the issuance of a report publicizing their findings. For several years, many survivors and advocates in New Jersey have been eagerly awaiting the release of this report.

Recently, it has been brought to the attention of many of the survivors that the New Jersey Courts have granted the Diocese of Camden’s request to stop any presentment of the Attorney General’s investigation to a Grand Jury, essentially shutting down any attempt at exposing the church’s history of crimes and cover-ups of sexual abuse.

At this point, the matter is now before the New Jersey Supreme Court on appeal.

“Many New Jersey survivors were abused decades ago and have been eagerly waiting for the release of the Grand Jury’s Report. The diocese’s continuing to push back legally creates delay after delay. It’s time for delays to stop and transparency and accountability to begin.” – Greg Gianforcaro, attorney
