Louisiana Child Victims Act Law Extended, Giving Abuse Survivors Three Years to Take Action

“The scales of justice are finally aligned. This legislative act creates a possibility that Louisiana survivors may continue their path of seeking justice.” – Jeff Anderson

(New Orleans, Louisiana) – Recently, the Louisiana legislature passed a law extending the June 2024 deadline for the Louisiana Child Victims Act by three years. This law became effective last week.

“By passing this law, the Louisiana legislature has clearly championed survivors again. Now, we look to the court to do the right thing.” – Molly Burke, attorney

This extension means survivors have more time to file their lawsuits, however, with a potential caveat. The Supreme Court is reconsidering its previous decision that the LA Child Victims Act is unconstitutional. The decision, which could be made anytime, will have an impact on survivors’ legal options. It will determine whether survivors can move forward, expose the dangers of child predators and institutions that protect them, or be shut out of the courthouse and silenced.

“This law has been a legal and emotional roller coaster for survivors,” said Burke. “But, for now, we are happy to hear some positive news – the extension of the deadline gives the survivors something they didn’t previously have – time. Time to continue to move forward towards justice.”
