Mark Berndt, a former teacher at Miramonte Elementary School, sexually abused and harassed minor students for years in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Berndt taught at Miramonte from 1979 to 2011. In 2014, LAUSD resolved legal claims totaling $139 million from 81 Miramonte students accusing Berndt of lewd acts. In 2014, LAUSD settled additional claims of two survivors of sexual abuse who alleged Berndt abused them from 2004 – 2008 when he was a teacher at Miramonte Elementary School. Mark Berndt was arrested in 2012 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
