Fr. John Ormechea was a Passionist priest who worked in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He spent at least four years living at a Passionist Retreat House in Sierra Madre, CA. Fr. Ormechea allegedly sexually abused minors at many of the locations at which he worked. In 1993, a survivor reported to Fr. Ormechea’s superiors that Fr. Ormechea sexually abused him as a child at Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago in 1983. The survivor and his parents were allegedly told that Fr. Ormechea had been removed from Immaculate Conception in 1988 because of another incident of inappropriate conduct with a minor. In 2003, Fr. Ormechea was removed from ministry after Chicago prosecutors reported that four other men had reported abuse by Fr. Ormechea when they were children. As of 2017, it is believed that Fr. Ormechea is working in Mission Appeals in Rome. Fr. Ormechea’s status as a priest, current whereabouts, and whether he has access to children are unknown.
