Richard J. Schaefer
In 2003, Fr. Richard J. Schaefer was named in a child sexual abuse lawsuit. Fr. Schaefer worked at St. Philip Neri in Northport, New York when he allegedly sexually abused a young boy for approximately three years in the 1960s. While working at St. Philip Neri Fr. Schaefer was in charge of a group of young boys who wanted to become priests. The survivor alleges Fr. Schaefer sexually abused five other boys in the group.
Fr. Richard J. Schaefer was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in 1958 and worked at the following locations:
- 1958-1961: St. Philip Neri, Northport, NY
- 1961-1962: St. Sylvester, Medford, NY
- 1962-1969: Absent on leave
