Joseph T. Mundy
In 1994, a religious educator reported Fr. Joseph T. Mundy to Msgr. Alan Placa of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. She believed Fr. Mundy groomed a 14-year-old boy for sex based on information the boy had told her. Fr. Mundy worked at St. John the Baptist in Wading River, New York when he allegedly sexually abused the boy over a period of three years. Fr. Mundy refused to go for treatment at St. Luke’s institute after the allegation was made, but agreed to see a private counselor in Long Island. A second survivor later came forward to report that Fr. Mundy had also sexually abused him as a child in the rectory at St. John the Baptist parish.
In 2002, a grand jury was convened to investigate the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s handling of clergy sexual abuse allegations. The Suffolk County Grand Jury’s description of Priest A matches public allegations against Fr. Mundy.
