Fr. George Boxelaar, a native of Holland, was ordained a Carmelite priest. In 1973 a minor boy told his father that Fr. Boxelaar sexually abused him during confession at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish school in Middletown, New York. When confronted by the boy’s father, Fr. Boxelaar reportedly denied the misconduct. Other mothers in the area allegedly reported to the boy’s mother that their sons were also sexually abused by Fr. Boxelaar. The boy’s family reportedly decided not to press charges so their son would not have to testify. Complaints of Fr. Boxelaar sexually abusing minor children were allegedly made to the Carmelites in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, and again in 1985, a mother allegedly reported that Fr. Boxelaar sexually abused her minor son. The same mother reported her son’s allegegations to state police, as did parents of other minors said to have been abused by Fr. Boxelaar. Again, it is reported that the families decided not to press charges so that their children would not have to testify. Fr. Boxelaar was quietly sent to Holland to retire in or around 1985. In 2002, after hearing news reports of Fr. Boxelaar’s abuse of minor boys, at least 25 more men came forward to say that they, too, were sexually abused as minor boys by Fr. Boxelaar. Fr. Boxelaar’s status as a priest, whereabouts, and whether he had access to children from 1985 until his death in 1990 are unknown.
