Curtis Carl Wehmeyer
A 1982 graduate of Gwinn High School in Gwinn, Michigan, Father Curtis Carl Wehmeyer went on to become an architect with a degree in Industrial Technology from Northern Michigan University in 1988. In 1977, Father Curtis Wehmeyer graduated from the University of St. Thomas with his Master’s degree in Philosophy and Theology. In 2001 he was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis at the St. Paul School of Divinity by Archbishop Harry Flynn.
Father Curtis Wehmeyer was appointed to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West St. Paul, MN from 2001-2006. He was then transferred to the Parish of The Blessed Sacrament in St. Paul, MN from 2006-2012. In 2009, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church merged with the Parish of The Blessed Sacrament. From the summer of 2010 until a report was made in June of 2012, Father Wehmeyer offered two minor brothers alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes, along with showing them pornography, before he molested them in his camper. Father Curtis touched the boys’ genitals, exposed himself and masturbated in front of them for two years.
In September of 2009, Father Curtis was arrested for a DWI in Fillmore County. Police received a complaint about Wehmeyer appearing intoxicated and asking young men, ages 18-21, if they wanted to party with him. Father Wehmeyer was staying in his camper at a state park nearby. He served 90 days in jail and was placed on two years of supervised probation.
On June 22, 2012, Father Curtis Wehmeyer was arrested in Ramsey County and charged with three counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct, and later 17 counts of possession of child pornography were added. He pled guilty to all 20 counts against him and is currently serving a five-year prison term. Father Wehmeyer was removed from Blessed Sacrament in June, 2012.
A civil lawsuit was filed on January 30, 2014 on behalf of a boy sexually abused by Father Curtis Wehmeyer at Blessed Sacrament. Wehmeyer was also charged with second-degree sexual assault in Chippewa County, Wisconsin in November 2014 for the sexual abuse of a teenage boy. Wehmeyer was served with laicization paperwork on March 11, 2015 to formally remove him from the priesthood.
On June 5, 2015 Ramsey County Attorney John Choi criminally charged the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis for its role in “failing to protect children and contribution to the unspeakable harm” done to the victims of Father Curtis Wehmeyer. The Archdiocese is only the second American diocese to have criminal charges filed against it.
