Diocese of Burlington Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

In October of 2024, the Diocese of Burlington in Vermont filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy allegedly due to financial strain on the diocese from lawsuits by survivors of clergy sexual abuse. We believe this decision by the diocese is a shallow attempt by the bishop to harbor perpetrators, conceal assets, and shield the truth from survivors of sexual abuse.

Historically, organizations such as Catholic dioceses and religious orders have used Chapter 11 Bankruptcy as a shield to prevent embarrassing jury trials, allowing the institution to continue “business as usual” while continuing to hide its secrets. Bishops use this legal tactic to prevent survivors of child sexual abuse from pursuing legal action, exposing predators, and holding the Diocese accountable. However, you still have legal rights. Diocese of Burlington Priest, Fr. Leo Courcy, Accused of Sexual Abuse

Fr. Leo Courcy was ordained as a priest by the Diocese of Burlington in 1962. In the early 1980s, following numerous warnings of Courcy’s inappropriate behavior toward children and multiple trips to treatment facilities for priests who sexually abuse children, Courcy was sent by the Diocese of Burlington to New York to work in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Archdiocese of New York. While assigned to the Diocese of Brooklyn, Courcy was working as a priest at Monsignor McClancy High School, where Courcy allegedly sexually abused a minor student. Courcy also worked as a priest at St. Frances de Chantal, where he allegedly sexually abused another minor. Courcy continued to work as a priest in New York for several years following the assaults.
