Alfred Longley: Substantiated Claims of Sexual Abuse of a Minor

Alfred Longley

Father Alfred Longley was born September 17, 1913, and ordained in 1939. He worked at parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis (“ADSPM”). Father Longley also performed Mass at his residence located in the Diocese in Duluth, near Gull Lake in the Brainerd, Minnesota area. The residence was known as “Domus David.”

Father Longley resigned as pastor of St. Jude of the Lake in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, in 1964. ADSPM officially lists Father Longley as being permanently removed from ministry in 1968. From approximately 1964-72, Father Longley continued to work at locations outside ADSPM, including at Domus David in the Diocese of Duluth, while listed as “on duty outside diocese.” In 1972, Father Longley was criminally investigated for sexually abusing boys at Domus David and providing them with alcohol. Father Longley died in 1974.

Father Longley is included on official lists of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse made public by the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Duluth. Efforts to unseal the secret documents regarding clergy sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and the Diocese of Duluth, began with the first lawsuits filed under the Child Victims Act in May and June of 2013. Since then, survivors have taken numerous actions to make the files public.

In October 2015, a jury verdict was handed down against the Diocese of Duluth in a child sexual abuse case in Ramsey County involving Fr. James Vincent Fitzgerald. Several documents regarding Father Longley were introduced into evidence at the trial.
