Christopher Pliauplis

In January 2006, a seventeen-year-old boy alleged that Fr. Christopher Pliauplis of the Archdiocese of New York sexually abused him. The Archdiocese of New York placed Fr. Pliauplis on leave in March 2006. In June 2006, the Archdiocese’s review board recommended that Fr. Pliauplis not be returned to ministry and his faculties were removed. Fr. Pliauplis maintained his innocence, hired a canon lawyer, and appealed the review board’s decision to a church court of the Archdiocese. The church court, made up of priests, found Fr. Pliauplis innocent and directed that he be returned to ministry. The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reviewed the case and upheld the church court’s ruling. Consequently, in 2008, the Archdiocese of New York directed that Fr. Pliauplis be returned to ministry and assigned him to Cathedral of St. Patrick in New York.
