John Francis O’Brien: Accused of Sexual Misconduct

In 2005, Bro. John Francis O’Brien, Congregation of Christian Brothers, Archdiocese of New York, was named in a class action lawsuit which included a survivor of sexual abuse. Bro. O’Brien sexually abused fellow Bro. Robert Hoatson from approximately 1979 to 1982. The civil lawsuit originally filed in 2005 against Bro. O’Brien was later dismissed in October 2009 by the New York Supreme Court.

Bro. John Francis O’Brien entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1958 and taught at Holy Cross in St. John’s Newfoundland (Canada); All Hallows in Bronx, New York; Iona Grammar in New Rochelle, New York; Rice High School in Manhattan, New York; Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, New York; and Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York. Bro. O’Brien entered St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York in 1986.

Fr. John Francis O’Brien was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New York on May 12, 1990. Fr. O’Brien worked as associate pastor at St. Sylvester’s in Staten Island, New York; as Vice Rector-Dean of Students at St. John Neumann Residence; and pastor at St. Pius X in Scarsdale, New York. Fr. O’Brien served at St. Pius X until his death on December 9, 2009.
