Brennan Maiers, OSB

On May 19, 2014, the priest file of Father Brennan Maiers, OSB, was publicly released. Maiers is one of 17 credibly accused clerics from St. John’s Abbey.

Father Brennan Maiers was born in Stewart, Minnesota on April 27, 1936. Father Maiers entered Saint John’s Seminary and professed vows as a Benedictine monk on July 11, 1957. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on June 1, 1963. Father Maiers earned a certificate of Clinical Pastoral Education in 1992 and in addition to his parish work, he worked as a chaplain in Duluth and St. Cloud.

In 1992, a man filed suit stating that Father Maiers abused him at age 9 in 1966. The suit was settled out of court in late 1992. Father Maiers admitted the abuse and also that he had been arrested for soliciting an undercover officer at an adult movie theater in 1984. He also admitted to sexual relationships with a woman and two men in New York in the 1970’s.

Father Maiers worked in various parishes throughout Minnesota and is included on four official lists of clergy members who have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse from three dioceses and one order including: the Saint John’s Abbey list (released 12/19/2013), the Diocese of Duluth list (released 12/31/2013), the Diocese of St. Cloud list (released 1/03/2014) and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis list (released 2/17/2014).

According to the Saint John’s Abbey list, the Diocese of Duluth list, the Diocese of St. Cloud list, and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis list, Father Brennan Maiers worked at the following parishes:

· 1966-68 St. Joseph’s Church, Browerville, MN

· 1969-76 St. Benedicts Church, Bronx, NY

· 1977-83 St, Boniface Church, Cold Spring, MN

· 1983-90 St. Bernard, St. Paul, MN

· 1991-92 St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, MN – earning a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education

· 1991-96 Chaplain at St. Scholastica Priory, Duluth, MN

· 1991-96 Adjunct Chaplain at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, MN

· 1993-96 Duluth Federal Prison

Ministerial Status: Father Maiers is still a monk and lives at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN. Father Maiers has permanently been removed from ministry and has been living at St. John’s Abbey on restriction since 2002. He works as the Abbey archivist and maintains the Abbey Chronicle.

On December 7, 2015, the Diocese of Duluth filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier in 2015.
