Peter Kiarie: Accused of Sexual Misconduct

Peter Kiarie

Fr. Peter Kiarie was a visiting priest from Kenya who worked in the Diocese of Brooklyn. In June 2002, Fr. Kiarie was arrested and criminally charged with child sexual abuse. Fr. Kiarie met the survivor at Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians in Woodside, New York. He allegedly took the survivor on a day trip to Rockaway Beach, New York City, New York, where he sexually abused the survivor. Fr. Kiarie rejected a plea bargain that would have given him ninety days in jail and demanded a trial by jury. In April 2003, a jury found Fr. Kiarie not guilty of child sexual abuse. Immediately after he was acquitted, Fr. Kiarie expressed his intent to return to Kenya as soon as possible.

Fr. Peter Kiarie was ordained a priest in 1993 and is a missionary priest of the Holy Ghost Fathers religious order. Fr. Kiarie went on a speaking tour in New York to raise money for Kenya churches. He preached at Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians in Woodside, New York.
