Basil P. Congro

On April 14, 2003, Fr. Basil P. Congro was named in a lawsuit brought by survivors of child sexual abuse. Fr. Congro worked for the Diocese of Rockville Centre at St. Mary’s in East Islip, New York, when he allegedly sexually abused a young boy. Prior to the lawsuit, Fr. Congro had been placed on administrative leave by the Diocese of Charleston in the fall of 2002.

Fr. Basil P. Congro was ordained a priest in 1978 and worked at the following locations within the Dioceses of Fresno, Rockville Centre, and Charleston:

  • 1979: St. John Cathedral, Fresno, CA
  • 1980-1981: Christ the King, Commack, NY
  • 1982-1983: St. Mary’s, East Islip, NY
  • 1984-1994: Military Chaplain (Navy) – Sent to Catania, Sicily
  • 1994-1997: St. Mary’s, Yonges Island, SC
  • 1997-1999: St. Anthony’s All Souls’ Memorial Church, Florence, SC
  • 1999-2001: Our Lady of Mercy, Charleston, SC
  • 1999-2002: St. Patrick’s, Charleston, SC
  • 2002: Jesus Our Risen Savior, Spartanburg, SC
  • 2002: Placed on administrative leave

Fr. Congro is also said to have worked at St. Frederick’s and St. Stephen’s on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Fr. Congro is believed to be residing in Charleston, South Carolina.
