Fr. John Joseph Daly was born in Ireland and reportedly worked in Australia until 1958, when he was transferred to San Diego. In approximately 1977, Fr. Daly was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 16-year-old hitchhiker who sought shelter at St. Joseph in Holtville, California. Fr. Daly was subsequently sent to El Carmelo Retreat house for a month and then moved to San Bernardino, thereby avoiding prosecution. It is reported that Fr. Daly had been arrested twice prior on sexual abuse charges in La Mesa, California and San Antonio, Texas. Fr. Daly has been named in at least one civil lawsuit.
