Hearing Today to Approve $40 million Settlement in the Diocese of Duluth Bankruptcy Case

(Duluth, MN) – Today in the United States Bankruptcy Court in Duluth, a hearing is scheduled at 11:00AM CT to approve a joint reorganization plan between sexual abuse survivors and the Catholic Diocese of Duluth.
If the plan is approved, it provides for a payment of over $40 million for sexual abuse survivors, the release of thousands of pages of documents held by the Diocese of Duluth on priests credibly accused of abuse, and implementation of future child protection protocols.
“This is an important day for sexual abuse survivors,” said attorney Jeff Anderson. “Thank you to all of the survivors who stood up and spoke their truths. Your voices were heard.”
The Diocese filed for bankruptcy protection on December 7, 2015 after a jury in Ramsey County awarded a Colorado man more than $8 million for sexual abuse he suffered by Father J. Vincent Fitzgerald in Squaw Lake, Minnesota, when the man was a child in 1977.
