The Diocese of Orange issued a press release on January 10, 2004, announcing it had reported 16 priests with accusations of sexual abuse to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Approximately 589 clergy ministered in the Diocese since its founding in 1976. A total of 47 people had come forward. Lay church employees were not included in the data presented.
As a result of the reports of courageous sexual abuse survivors, 12 of the priests were removed from active ministry and 15 of the 16 identities of the accused priests were released to the public.
