Msgr. Harry Byrne was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of New York. Msgr. Byrne was appointed Chancellor for the Archdiocese of New York in 1968. He reportedly initiated the early introduction of altar girls while working at Epiphany Parish in New York. In 2017, Msgr. Byrne was indicted on charges of possession of child pornography involving minor girls, allegedly found on a computer in his apartment at St. John Vianney Center for Retired Priests in the Bronx, New York. The Archdiocese of New York stated that Msgr. Byrne has “been indicted by a grand jury and [has] been removed from ministry pending the outcome of [his] criminal case.” Msgr. Byrne was named on the Archdiocese of New York’s 2019 “List of Archdiocesan Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or the Subject of Eligible IRCP Compensation Claims” under the subsection “[t]he following archdiocesan clergy are awaiting final canonical or archdiocesan disposition of allegations against them.” It is believed that Msgr. Byrne is currently residing at St. Lawrence Friary Infirmary in Beacon, New York. His status as a priest and whether he has access to children are unknown.
